Well the way Prue died is a long story. Pretty much what happened was:
Prue and Piper got blown through a wall by the Source's demonic assassin Shax, whilst trying to save an innocent. Luckily for them, Phoebe came running down the stairs with a spell to deter Shax and then called Leo to heal the girls.
Unfortunately for them, later on Shax attacked Piper and Prue, and being without a spell, Piper blew Shax up - in front of a news team which just happened to be in the local area.
Long story short, the girls were exposed as witches, and in the midst of everything, Piper got shot by a crazy girl who wanted to "join their coven" and got annoyed when Prue shoved her out of the house. Prue used her powers to shove people out the way so she could get to the hospital. However Piper didn't recover from the shot and died. Prue was seen as a threat by the FBI and so they sent in a SWAT team to shoot her whilst she was at the hospital, mourning Piper.
Meanwhile, Phoebe went to the underworld to see if she could save Cole from the Source. Leo orbed down there to tell her what was going on and Phoebe managed to strike a deal with the Source that he would turn back time if she would join the underworld.
Unfortunately, time wouldn't be reversed in the underworld and so Phoebe was still down there when time reset, leaving Piper and Prue to be blown through the wall by Shax, but without Phoebe to save them.
There's a bit of a discrepancy as to what happened next as they stopped the episode there, and the next ep skipped to Prue's funeral, but the consensus is that somehow Phoebe, Leo and Cole got out of the underworld in time for Leo do heal Piper but not Prue.

I think she was shot and Leo couldnt save her.

im pretty sure she got shot but i could be worng or mistake it for someone eles i havent seen that show in ages so idk
