I've heard people talking about overclocking-running the processor higher, right? how exactly is this done? what are the dangers? how do you cool it so it doesn't overheat and what do you cool it with.?

im not really interested in overclocking my computer, it runs beautifully at 3.00 Gigahertz and i plan to keep it there.

My man.... overclocking your computer will be the biggest mistake that you will ever make. Overclock the processor means making it work or force it to do more. It's wrong. There are other boards that you can overclock in the CMOS settings, others you can overclock manually by changing the settings or frequency on the board, and i know there are programs that you can use to overclock your PC. Why overclock? Is your computer runnin' slow? Just make regular pc check-up, virus scans, adwares, spywares, windows regestry which is very important. Doing this things regulary will maintain the speed of your computer. Don't force it. Overheating is not you'r enemy.. Money is.......

Overclocking is making the CPU run at higher clock speed than it was designed to. i.e. a 2.4Ghz CPU clock speed overclocked to 3.0Ghz. It is done in the BIOS of the computer. I would not recommend that you do this, unless you are prepared to buy a new CPU. The CPU may burn up, and even if overclocked to where it did run in a stable state will wear out much faster than if used normally. Most people who tinker with overclocking use a special water cooling system in their computers that works on the same principal as a car's radiator, they are expensive to install. There are also air-conditioned cases.

A Good Graphics card is best , Nvidia do very good ones from 8600 upwards. G/ Force model. I have a Nivdia 8800, plays the new games a treat. CRYSIS and COD 4. Overclocking can give you many problems. And unless you have a good quality G/Card ,i would not bother, also you will probaly need a better cooling system, and extra power. Is this really worth the trouble.

Okay let me answer you question by the parts you asked,
1. It is done in different ways, the most common is by entering the BIOS and changing to clock speed.
2. The dangers are if you clock it too high the processor generates too much heat and it can fry. You can also damage other components because there speed is dependent on the core clock speed, and a novice will inadvertantly fry one of those components.
3. You cool it with either a fan/heatsink or some other cooling method such as liquid cooling or phase change cooling.

You do this by entering the bios and raising the clock setting. The higher it is the better the performance, but it will aslo get hotter and live much shorter. You can cool with fans or liquid, but for extreme overclocking, you need a good board and a very cool case, or at least one with water cooling.

Site about overclocking. I've never done it before but I do know the dangers.

You could burn your process/motherboard which is basically 'frying' it. You could also cause the life of the cpu/motherboard to decrease rapidly. Basically, you could kill your high dollar pc.

Using the right hardware also comes in handy. People have said that ASUS mobos have implemented overclocking features and sometimes support it.

As for keeping it cool, you could buy a bigger, faster fan, or water cooling.

Use a case with good ventilation. There are plenty of aftermarket replacement fans that are a snap to put in and have high airflow. Sort of a trade-off between higher decibels and high air flow. Replacement Heatsinks for the CPU are another common way to increase cooling. Cooling with liquid is even more effective route to go.

There are various ways to overclock a processor such as BIOS options or using software. The danger is that you could seriously damage your processor in the process, rendering it useless. You cool it by getting better fans and more efficient heat-sinks.

the msi 865 neo2 with the presscoct prosessor ,is designed to overclock safely for certain games that require higher front bus speeds ,and also has a safty feature built in to return to the norrmal settings without damage to the processor chip, normally it is a very unstable task unless you have a mobo, processsor combo that can handle this feature ,best of luck

overclocking is when you speed up the computer to a speed most often used on gaming computers. like the other person said if you don't know what your doing you can screw up the computer...bad. there are cases of people overclocking too much, and the computer will explode.
