it started out as three but by the time the show ended i think there had been 6. Larry, Curly, Moe and Shemp. Then I think they had replaced 2 of them which made 6. If i'm not mistaken.

the orriginals were moe, larry and shemp. Curly replaced shemp because shemp didn't want to do the job. curly died of a stroke and was replaced for a time by shemp again and then by joe. Joe had it in the contract he could not be hit, so the three stooges eventually stopped when they stopped being funny. so in all reality there were 5, but no more than 3 at a time. There is only one 3 stooges clip where there were actually 4. there was moe larry, shemp, and curly made a cameo. He already had a stroke so his part was very small (sleeping in a saet on a train as a passenger. he died shortly after that.)

There were six. Moe, Larry and Shemp, originally. Shemp replaced by Curly. Curly replaced by Joe, Joe replaced by Curly-Joe. A 7th stooge was added to the line-up after Larry's stroke (Emil Sitka?), but never had a chance to perform with the group.
