There is a home on land that my company is possibly buying. I want to buy this home. I have never owned a home, as I was a horse trainer and traveled my early years. I am now 50 with 2 spinal fusions and work in an equine semen freezing lab. Are there any programs that might help me buy this home, though my income is low, my work record is top level. I have heard there were grants to help Natives get low interest loans for home ownership or to start a business, both of which are areas I need, and have the ability to handle. Well, any help would be great!

I don't know if you legally belong to a tribe, if not, you should try to gain membership - because once you're a member there are many governmental grants to help you out. You might see if you can buy the house for $1, with the understanding that you'll move it to your own lot - that might be the most cost effective way to get into that house (but make sure they let you live in it where it is for about 5 years to prepare for the lot / water / sewer of the new land).

Ya'a't'eeh shikish! Do a google search on NAHASDA, the Native American Housing and Self-Determination Act, and see what's applicable. Don't know if you're on the rez but that would help. My mother-in-law received a low interest housing loan through a rural housing program but you've got to be on the rez. If you have a homesite lease somewhere, that would help.

Contact the Navajo Housing Authority or the tribal Housing Department to see what's available off rez. The tribe's switchboard number is 928.871.6000.

Each indian nation has their own housing programs in where they either get their funds from their own economic development department, the indian nations bank, or through government secured and or guaranteed programs. If you are seeking a loan for property outside of the tribal lands held in trust then you might want to look at HUD's program here is their link:

Contact the leaders of your tribe. There are lots of programs out there to assist Native Americans, both Federal and from the individual Tribes.

Good luck!

try asking someone from the nearest reservation to you. they will know, and theres websites to help native americans get funding for just about anything. the low income could be a plus these days. if it were up to me, i would give you a loan, no questions asked, because of your occupation. long live secretariat
