We are thrown into existence, and into a pre-existing web of meanings and relationships (the world). In this sense, we are a victim. We did not choose to exist, we did not choose our essential nature, we did not choose the worldly context into which we were born. We cannot choose how other people will see us (we can influence this, and for the most part create an image for ourselves, but ultimately if certain people form a prejudiced option of us (or our race, our gender, sexual orientation, lifestyle preferences, etc.) and if these people are not open to learning anything new, then we are victims of their prejudice even before we meet them.
On the other hand, given the fact that we do exist, we are fundamentally free within the context of our world. We are more than the nature/nurture of our individual bodies. We are Being itself experiencing its own existence from a particular perspective. As such, there is no strict limit to our possibilities – although there are local limits and contextual restraints based on our individual biological perspectives.
It is possible to master our fate, but most people do not do this. They flee from their authentic potentials and let themselves become totally absorbed in the world – often becoming slaves to their own comfort, fears, greed, etc.
A deep mystery of life: how would you master your fate through self-understanding if you are, for example, thrown into existence as a child with some incurable disease and staving to death in a 3rd-world nation where your access to food, water, and education are limited. Realistically, how can a person avoid being a victim in desperate circumstances like this? Being is fundamentally free, but it seems as if individual beings often have little hope of understanding this.

The choice is always ours. If we accept the circumstance, we are free from it and are masters, with a choice to decide what to do about it. If we resist, we are a slave, victim, fated to allow the circumstance to overpower us, to decide even our future !

i think most of us are responsible for our life courses... but like to pull the victim card way too many times. when its convenient, we are masters...... and victims.
