My husband is a network engineer. He said to:
1. run an ethernet cable to the upstairs so you can have the wireless node closer to where you need it. OR
2. You can have a ethernet hub and run two wireless Linksys devices... one upstairs and one downstairs. Make sure they're on different channels. You may need a 4 port hub on the computer downstairs with the dsl connection. OR
3. You can get another brand or another unit which is more powerful.
4. If you just want to increase the power of your downstairs unit, you can get a better, more powerful, or directional antenna for the Linksys unit if it will accept another antenna.
The operating systems of your computers isn't an issue.

I definitely have used the two a under pressure out and on the spot connection and that i'm able to declare that a under pressure out connection is extra effective. You in no way get internet interference and the downloading velocity is a lot swifter. whether my router is upstairs and my PS3 is in the basement so a under pressure out connection became a soreness. The on the spot connection works positive. in case you're very precise and choosy, i assume bypass with the under pressure out connection yet whilst the router is a lot from the PS3 that's not properly well worth the hassel. I say on the spot connection is extra effective average. yet you extremely won't observe a distinction.

Try a wireless range expander.

You probably have lots of metal in your building which would interfere with reception.

Here's a Linksys expander from Compusa. You can pretty much get them anywhere though.

Hope this helps.

The best solution is not to use WEP. WEP is no longer safe to use. The best package to implement is WPA-PSK with a stronger encryption algorithm like AES if its available. Most of the newer routers/firewalls include this within its types of algorithms options.
