The thinking then (and one of convenience if you ask me) is that slaves weren't "people," they were property. Therefore, they didn't qualify for the same rights as individuals. Sad, but true. The same was also thought of women as well, as her identity was through her husband.

At the time they didn't condsider slaves to be on the same level as themselves, they were considered a lower life form- much like animals. Therefore liberty doesn't apply to them. Of course now we are not so ignorant in that respect so it seems crazy.

That is an excellent question! I'm taking it that you are referring to the Confederate States prior to the U.S. Civil War. I don't think they were fighting for liberty, just for their way of life. I don't know if that means the same thing or not, but this certainly is a thought provoking question.

For election of representatives 3/5 of slave population was counted. Slaves were slaves in slave states but in other states they were counted SO slaves didn't count as citizens in the same way and The South had a fear of release of slaves, and a lost labor force, their way of life would disappear.

because to them slaves were property just the same as a chair or a broom..inanimate property, so to their way of thinking they had no account in the fight for liberty. not condoning or approving of what went on, just offering an explanation

Remember the Dred Scott decision? That blacks were not considered to be human and therefore had no civil rights?
(I hope I am remembering this correctly)
