Alfred Hitchcock's Phycho is going to be hard to beat. Just about everyone knows about the shower scene, even if they've never seen it.

That is a really good question, but so hard to answer!!! Evil Dead is really good (I have heard of it, and love it) but so is the first HellRaiser. I really like the Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street, and Halloween series as well, but they have more gore than scares in them. Hmmm...I think I am going to have to pick Evil Dead just because it has a pretty good balance of scares and story, and the fact that they did it all with a low film budget is cool since they managed to make an awesome film with practically no money.

The greatest horror film ever made was Nightmare on Elm Street.

The original version of "The Body Snatchers" scared the
bejebers out of me when I was a kid! As a 12 year old sitting
in a school auditorium surrounded by screaming girls I was screaming like one of them, all macho was compromised. It took
months before I could go to sleep without worrying about pods.
Thank you for reviving this wonderful memory.

The Entity, The Exorcist, Poltergeist all, Ammityville all, and I like a few of the newer ones too. All are worth a shot.

Although I like the classics, my new favorite is House of 1000 Corpses by Rob Zombie.
Just when you think it couldn't get any more bizarre, it does.

I believe expert critics have already answered this with "The Exorcist".

In my opinion, it was the Shining because it is plausible. I think the real answer is The Exorcist.
