Plants make sugar from water, carbon dioxide from the air, and nutrients they draw up through their roots from the soil. Sunlight is the energy source, and chlorophyll is the catalyst. The process is called photosynthesis.

Some plants like mushrooms do not use photosynthesis or chlorophyll, but draw their nutrients from rotting vegetation in the soil which has already produced sugars. Other parasitic plants draw their sugars and nutrients from other plants.
