Basically it's the "raping of innocence". The land in it's original, untouched and undisturbed state is destroyed by the plane. That same plane crash and scar across the land is analogous to the scar left in the psychology of the boys; the loss of their innocent childhood.

the scar could symbolize some problems to come, emotional scarring, physical pain.or, while the world was at war, these boys problems were actually smaller than the world's problems. a scar is less than a broken arm
