Apples are collected in a basket for six people. One third, one fourth, one eighth, and one fifth of the apples are given to four people, respectirely. The fifth person gets ten apples with one apple remaining for the sixth person. Find the original number of apples in the basket.

I already got the equation, which is 1/3x+14x+1/8x+1/5x+10+1
But i don't know how to solve it, can u solve this and show me how u did it? Please. Thank you!

well, your formula is incomplete.

1/3X + 1/4x + 1/8x + 1/5x + 10 + 1 = x.

120 is the lowest common denominator, so:

40/120x + 30/120x + 15/120X + 24/120x + 11 = x

add your fractions:
109/120x + 11 = x

multiply by 120:
109x + 1320 + 120x

subtract 109x:
1320 = 11x

divide by 11:
120 = x

Add the fractions you have. The common denominator will be 120.
40/120 + 30/120 + 15/120 + 24/120 =109/120

So the portion of apples given to people with the fractions is 109/120 of the total.

The 11 apples that are left would be worth 11/120 of the total. So what I would do is figure out:
11x/120 = 11
11x = 1320
x = 120 apples

1/3 = 40/120
1/4 = 30/120
1/8 = 15/120
1/5 = 24/120
10/120
1/120
you have to find the lowest common denominator
the origional number in the basket was 120... if you add the fractions together you get 109 out of 120... then you add the remaining apples... you get 120... thus the begining number was 120 hope this helps

using the equation x=1/3x+1/4x+1/8x+1/5x+10+1

1. get all of the variables on the same side by subtracting 1/3x,1/4x,1/8x,and 1/5x from both sides leaving....

x-(1/3x+1/4x+1/8x+1/5x)=11

2. get a common denominator --- 120 so that...

120/120x - (40/120x+30/120x+15/120x+24/120x)=11

3. add like terms...

120/120x - 109/120x =11

4. repeat...

11/120x=11

5. multiply both sides by the reciprocal of 11/120

(120/11) 11/120x = 11 (120/11)

6. by multiplying we find that the x = 120

1/3x+1/4x+1/8x+1/5x+10+1=x
1/3x+1/4x+1/8x+1/5x-x=-11
x[1/3+1/4+1/8+1/5-1] = -11
take the LCM of the fraction is 120
so x[ 40+30+15+24-120]=-11
--------------------------
120
x[-11/120]=-11
x=11*120/11
x=120
1/3*120=40
1/4*120=30
1/8*120=15
1/5*120=24
40+30+15+24+10+1=120
