Let me sum it up , Been there 25 years , good pay and good benefits but terrible management and a very vindictive manager. He passed up some of us older technicians for promotion and promoted a non-union member and didnt even post the job for us to know about it ! I have dreamed of leaving but I can retire in 5 years and I am at the top of the Seniority list . I have a new job lined up in the same field. Should I tough it out or take a chance somewhere else ? This is a tough decision. I do not know what to do ! I dont like going to work and I dont even like my co-workers anymore. But I am in familiar turf. Would you change to a new job at 50 years old under these circumstances ?? Thanks

Wow what a tough decision! You have been there for 25 years so that is a lot of time you have invested in the company! Let's look and pros and cons:
New Job-Pros
Different (hopefully better) management
Possibility of moving up and not getting "passed up"
Regaining your happiness!!!<-----most important
Looking forward to going to work everyday
New co-workers that you can like!

New Job Cons
Starting from the bottom and working your way to the top
Possibility of encountering a**hole managers (because they are everywhere)
Delayed retirement??

Do you think you will be happier at your new job? Isn't your happiness the most important thing...If you are unhappy and stressed out all the time then what is your quality of life? If deep down you think the change will be good then go for it! If you decide to leave, tape a tuna sandwich underneath the "vindictive" managers desk...that should bring a smile to your face as you walk outta there! Good luck!

First of all, is the manager the owner? Did you file a greivance with the union? It sounds like you may have recourse in getting the manager evaluated (unless he's the owner). Now, you have only 5 years until you have freedom and you've said you have good pay and benefits. These days that's kinda important. The job you have lined up may be the grass that looks greener on the other side with even worse management, lay off potential, etc. You really need to think of a the worst case "what if" on either side of the fence. What are the pros and cons? Which factor is most important? I've seen people leave for better opportunities and I've seen people leave to find themselves only able to get part time work for $8 an hour because of their age. If you were in prison with 5 years to go on a 25 year sentence, would you escape??? There's your answer!!!

Politics are everywhere and in every job. Unfortunately, you don't know that you won't be dealing with the same old stuff but with a new name if you change jobs and finding a new job at the age of 50 could be very difficult if the new job doesn't work out.

If you have enough money set aside to pay bills, etc. for several months if you are unemployed, then I'd give leaving some serious thought.

On the other hand, if you can't afford to be unemployed for at least six months, try to stick it out. Who knows, you probably aren't the only one this new manager is upsetting and he is liable to be given the boot so your remaining five years might not all be bad.

Hell no don't quit your job. Geesh what are you thinking. It's only five years. You know as well as I do how fast 5 years goes bye. At the end of five years I bet another job will still be available for a man with your expeience. You're a full grown man. Don't let your boss and co-workers get on your nerves. Just look at them and smile. Think to yourself. I only have 5 more years and they can't take away what I've earned.

If you are sure of your new job, then why not take the plunge? If your current job is difficult, it would be better to move on to another job where there is less politics going on. If you are good worker, age doesn't matter. It's better to be happy at a job than to be stressed and miserable.

I was in a similar situation. I was at a job for a while, very comfortable, knew my place, but I was unhappy. I did leave it and I'm glad that I did.

The job I took to replace it didnt work out and I was unemployed this summer, but I took a chance and I'm a better person for it. I say go for it, you never know.

No. Arkansas is hard to get unemployment and they make you jump through hoops for a small amount of benefits. Your reason would not work, and the employer can appeal and would probably win.

if you can makes money without working for other people - yes.
if you have enough residual income for your daily need - yes
if you have enough saving for a few years - yes

change your job and create your own business.

but, if you still love what you do, then... no.. stick to your job.
