fracture. So basically it is the top of my foot. It has been a week and I have a doctors appointment on Tuesday. It is swollen on top still. Does anyone have any idea about what kind of cast I would get or if I would get one. I was maybe thinking about inquiring about a walking cast since the fracture is on top. And does anyone have any idea about how long it is going to take or this to heal? thanks

An Avulsion fracture is when the tendon or ligament pulls a piece away from the bone. Healing time will depend on the location of the fracture and it's severity. It may take 6-8 weeks. Your doctor will make the decision on when you will be able to fully weight bear through your foot. A walking cast may not be the best solution. You want the bone to heal quickly and completely.

In the meantime, use RICE to control pain and swelling (Rest; Ice; Compression; Elevation).

BTW: How do you know you have a fracture if you have not been to your doctor's yet?

I can tell you that it will never be the same. Now saying that I can also tell you that the swelling might go down if you put ice on it and ...stay off it????I get the feeling we're not doing that. Also, a simple sprain lasts for at least 6 weeks. So, sounds like yours is more complicated. The best thing you can do is listen to your doctor. Doing the right thing now and allowing it to heal correctly during the first stage of the injury will improve the outcome and that's what you need to be concerned with. Good luck. Raise it above your heart when you are off it!!!!!
