I think most of the answerers misunderstood the question. We all know that the planes crashed into the buildings, but they withstood the impact & stood for some time, with fire raging away.
It was this that caused the structure of those floors to fail & collapse onto the next lower floor, which in turn collapsed, due to it's weight, onto the next lower floor an so no. What if the fire had started due to some other reason and became out of control? The same failure of structure on those floors would have occured, with the same floor onto floor collapse.
I watched this event live on tv from just a few moments after the first tower was hit, watching the fire & smoke pouring from the building & wondering how they were going to save those poor souls on those floors & then the next tower was hit. But the real shock was seeing the collapse of the towers & said to myself, "that is structural failure" & I still believe it to this day.

Omg all you Pricks out there that think this was set up by the Government on conspiracy... should just go kill yourself .
No Man on this Earth eg The Government would want to kill Hundreds people , Don't be so **** en Stupid !
The Plane had loads of Fuel so this = Massive Explosion
Also you have to take in to account that the building has Gas Mains in it also . Also done so much Damage that all the weight on top of the building made it totally unstable so that's why it Broke up , Saying someone blow up the building is Crazy and i think you people really need to sit down and think about it . The Government wouldn't kill Normal everyday people for nothing..........................
The building was not made to take the impact of Jet with loads Fuel . Its as Simple as that .

No. I don't think that architects are usually thinking about making their building so structurally sound that it could handle a commercial jetliner crashing into the top of the building. I don't think there are many building materials that can even withstand the heat generated by the impact and the flaming jet fuel.

Why do people like you try to be brainy? If you are not you cannot be, so just stop trying to start a controversy. The answers you have suffice!
If I was from one of the construction companies and would read your question, I would not be happy!
Why try to make other people unhappy when there has been enough grief already?

I would think it was due to exploding Jet Planes. The buidings were earthquake proof and well withstood the garage bombings with little structural damage. A jet plane loaded with gas is like a very big bomb coming. Even mountains crumble when youtoss a plane at them.

No, I think the collapse was due to large aircraft with 100's of gallons of jet fuel flying into them. I don't think that contingency was one that the architects thought too much about.

The building, complete with its quality of construction, would have stood for many years if certain uncooth elements had not interfered with it.

For the answer above (not the original question).
It was sabotage by big business who were being investigated by the FBI. Little robot mice carrying mini-bombs collected in the elevator shafts. A radio signal started them squeaking and an audio controlled switch detonated the mini bombs.
You silly, silly person!

No, I think it is because terrorists deliberately destroyed them because they want to kill as many Americans as they possibly could.

I was surprised that it didn't fall over. When it was built no one thought about a plane flying into it on purpose.
