Jamaica has two Jamaicas. First one, is resort and tourist Jamaica. Almost everybody arrives at Montego Bay airport in the north of the island and go to an all inclusive hotel. Then, people say to you that it's dangerous to go out and you must have a guide. You should buy a Lonely Planet guide and decide for yourself. Jamaica can be fun if you can deal with hassle and people trying to sell you goods. Jamaica is not dangerous, only downtown Kingston can be.
The best Jamaica, believe me, is real Jamaica, where the majority of tourists don't go: Portland Parish, in the east, is the most beautiful and quiet part; if you want to stay quietly in the sun and meet nice, friendly people, get a taxi to Treasure Beach, in the south. It's cheaper, it's friendly and people protect you down there from hassle.
Negril, Ocho Rios and Montego Bay are resort areas. They are good but you'll be treated as a tourist, with lots of money in your pocket. Jamaicans expect you to be rich.
Negril is the best of three resort areas for reggae live music (Alfred's, Bourboun Beach). There are shows every week at the beach. For party, Negril is the best. Guides are going to invite you to several waterfalls (Dunns River Falls, Mayfiedl Falls, Ys Falls).
Well, it's not the easiest of countries because of hassle but I don't consider it dangerous.

It relies upon on truly some factors. Jamaica might want to be a astonishing position to stay if to procure money. once you're searching to paintings then i desire to procure some very solid skills. also bear in mind that residing like a community isn't a similar as being on a holiday. In declaring that it is my record. pros a million. sunlight 2. warmth climate 3. coastline 4. nutrition 5. impressive homes (compared to traditional British ones) 6. Many impressive places to take a damage after a demanding week's (month's) paintings. Cons a million. site visitors 2. Crime 3. street safe practices (reckless drivers, potholes, and so on) 4. decrease paid jobs in evaluation to first international international locations 5. Banks

We were in Jamaica in July and LOVED it. We stayed near Ocho Rios. I suggest you take some time to pick your resort carefully. Different resorts cater to different groups. Some cater to kids while others don't allow kids. Some are set up for relaxation while others offer a party atmosphere. Some are very plush while others are more basic. Decicde what you want in your resort and go from there. Check out TripAdvisor.com for reviews on resorts and then the forums section there will give you a question and answer on the general geographic area. It is very informative.

My advice is: stay with the tour guides and groups, don't wonder off and stay within the safety of your hotel compound. In spite of all the wonder pictures of Jamaica, it is a dangerous place to roam about in. WARNING !!!
