The answers above are fine but you will hit a dead end on problems like: 3 x 10^56 / 660.

Scientific calculators have a way to enter big numbers. Usually its the "EXP" key. You enter 3.3, push "EXP" then enter 8. Then just divide by 660.

For negative exponents, like 4.55 x 10^-12, it would be: 4.55 "EXP" 12 "+/-"

You will notice the exponent on the result showing up as a small 2 digit number in the upper right or as a number to the right of the main number separated by a sign (+ or -).

Finally, when you work with big numbers, like 4.55 x 10^-8, the -8 is termed the exponent (this the EXP key) and the 4.55 is the mantissa.

Don't push more buttons than you have to. Change the 660 to 6.6 x 10^2. Now, take 3.0 divided by 6.6. That answer will be multiplied by 10^4. Division of scientific notation means that you subtract your powers. Since this answer doesn't have a digit to the left of the decimal point, you'll have to move the decimal point over one place making the final power of ten be 3. Hence, the final answer is 4.54 x 10^3. For total accuracy, you should put a bar over the 54 to show that the pattern continues forever.

You have to enter a 1 followed by 8 zeros, then divide by 660, press =, then multiply by 30

This is how I would answer this question.

1. convert 8/660 to a decimal.

So, 8/660 is about 0.012...a repeating decimal.

2. raise 10 the 0.012 power.

3. multiply by 3.

NOTE: Each calculator has its own set of instructions set by a specific manual.

Do you have a TI-36X calculator? If so, write back.
