Okay so I have three red eared sliders. One of them is having problems. He has a black sack coming out of his anus and it is pretty big(.5 in). I have heard this may be a prolapse which is very serious but he has had this for many months now and seems to be fine other than that. He is just as active as the other ones and he still eats. I want to know:
1. if this is a prolapse how much does the surgery cost
2. is he in pain(should he be put to sleep if I can't afford the surgery)
3.is in normal that a turtle will survive this long with a prolapse or could it be a crazy tail deformity?
I need advice as much as you can give .
Please help,I love this little guy.

Back up!

First and foremost, it is pobably NOT a serious (intestinal)prolapse. They are usually pinker/tanner. What you are seeing is possibly just what is called a 'penile prolapse' and is usually not a big deal.

Intestinal prolapse occurs when some of the actual intestine (pinkish/tannish tissue) gets shoved out of the cloaca. This often seems to occur when trying to pass gravel. If it happens then goes away, do not worry about it- but double check the basic care conditions and monitor the turtle's general health. Be sure to protect or isolate the turtle when the tissue is exposed.

If it does not retract, or if it happens frequently, take it to a vet. It often does not require surgery to repair, and the turtle does not seem to experience pain because of it.

Penile prolapse is usually a darker tissue. This often happens for no reasons we can identify, although there does seem to be an increased aggressiveness sometimes, so the turtle should be isolated for a while.

Like with intestinal prolapse, if it goes away, don't worry a lot but monitor the conditions and health.

Please take to time to read over a good care sheet for these turtles and make sure that the basic needs and diet are being met- while no one knows for sure, some care problems might contribute to prolapses.

I'm pretty sure that's the turtle's pen1s. Sounds a little weird and maybe gross that it pops out like that, but it's true. It's not a prolapse if it's black and it pops out once in a while but he pulls it back in. Ever since my male turtle sexually matured, he's had the same thing happen every once in a while. He may even flash you more of it (like a couple centimeters). So, we've established:

1. It's not a prolapse
2. He's not in pain, it's kind of like a turtle b0ner
3. It's not a deformity, your turtle is just sexually mature. =)

I'm dead serious, I know this sounds weird and offensive, but it's true. You can even do a search for it if you don't believe me. No surgery or drastic action is required, your turtle is just a happy male camper.

If you have another male out of the remaining two the same thing will probably start happening. Males have long claws and fat tails, females have smaller tails and short, stubby claws. If your b0ner-turtle has long claws, that's another hint that he's normal and healthy.

Good luck!

You are not going to find turtle experts here.

Go to kingsnake.com. There are many tutle care discussion forums there, including one dedicated to red-ears and other sliders.
