I am 38 weeks pregnant. My last appointment was last wednesday and I was 1cm dilated, 90%effaced, soft and up-close. I have an appointment tomorrow and I was wondering if I am dilated more will they send me to the hospital? I have heard that when some women go to the doc. they find out they have dilated a whole lot more they will go straight to the hospital for labor. Why is that, even if they havent naturally gone into labor? and what will they make you do when you go to the hospital? will they induce? thanks! I am new to all of this and just wondering some experiences.

I was 40 weeks pregnant and 5 cm dilated and "ready any moment." I was actually afraid the baby would drop out. Strong Braxton Hicks too. But it was 10 days later when the typical labor pains started and I spent 20 more hours in labor.

You typically will not be admitted unless you are at a 4 or are in active labor.. The reason is because once you dialate that far labor can come on very quickly, and to wait longer will be foolish. It can also indicate problems if it doesn't start.
If you do go in, they will usually have you walk the halls until if/when you start labor. You can also do this yourself at home. Most any physical exercise- walking, sex, etc- will induce labor if the baby has dropped and is ready. If the baby has NOT dropped and you try and induce labor....get ready for a potential emegency c-section. This is because when the baby suddenly drops after the water is broken, the cord can get in the way and be cut off. If your doctor can feel the baby's head, he is probably ready for birth.

I just delivered 6 weeks ago and I was the same as u on my 36 th week. They dont like to check u everyweek but what u could get them to do is strip your membrane. That will bring on labor sooner after they do that go and walk and have sex if u have a partner. I ended up going 4 days over my due date he or she will come when they want to. They will not induce u unless the baby is in distress or u are over your due date. I am a nurse for 10 years and was new to this all also.Good lick it is as bad as people say I actually cant remember a pain.

They won't send you to the hospital until you are at least 3 cm dialated. Since this is your first, hopefully they will let you go naturally (not induced). When you start having contractions, you don't really need to go to the hospital until your water breaks or you are having contractions steady for 3-5 minutes for at least an hour straight. Good luck, you will do just fine!

well if you go to the doc and your 100% effaced and say 4-5 cm then you will most likely go to the hospital even if your water hasnt broke yet... you would most likely go in a have your water broken for you and then it will make you dilate faster...dependant on how long it takes you might or might not get pitocin but you will have a iv of fluids and if you havent had the group b strep test then you will get antiboitoics

You get to choose if you want to go or not. as long as the baby is healthy and you are not having any problems than no, don't go. Don't just do it because they tell you to. the only reason they do that is for the doctors convenience. I would wait as long as possible, you are much less stressed at home and are less likely to have problems when you are relaxed.... Good luck and know that you always have a choice....

They won't put you in the hospital. Not unless something changes drastically before your appt. Good Luck ! :)
