There were a few illustrated comics of the modern type on sale in Britain as early as 1874. Most of them folded again fairly soon, but "Comic Cuts" ran from 1890 to 1953, and lots of older people still remember it. By the 1930's, there were plenty of children's comics to choose from.

In 1827, Switzerland's Rudolphe Töpffer created a comic strip and continued on to publish seven graphic novels. In 1837, "The Adventures of Obadiah Oldbuck" was published by Rudolphe Töpffer and it is considered the earliest known comic book. In 1842, "The Adventures of Obadiah Oldbuck" became the first comic book published in the United States. "Obadiah Oldbuck" was a forty page book. Each page had several picture panels with accompanying text underneath.

they were invented in the 1940's when America was at war and children needed heroes and people to look up to, comic book heroes were created. they had super powers, incredibly smart, and could always extinguish any villain. they offered a fantasy, almost like an escape from what was really happening in the real world, it was a phenomenon.
