Most cells have very little color until we stain them to see the parts. The parts take on color differently so we can see them better. Chromosomes take on much color. That is why they are called chromosomes, chromo means color.

Various shades of gray. There are many types of stains to highlight cell parts. Some stains highlight some cell parts more than others.
