My preferred way is to remove the keys one at a time and clean them with warm water and a cloth and use cotton buds(Q tips?) to clean the space under them on the keyboard.

If you're just trying to get gunk off the keycaps, I've found that it works best to lay some paper towel over the keyboard and saturate it with glass cleaner or any simple cleaner meant for cleaning kitchen counters.
Do this with the keyboard unplugged and the computer off. I don't recommend this for laptop keyboards at all.
The saturated paper will cling to the keyboard and hold the cleanser up against the gunk. After 1-3 minutes you can take the paper towel and start rubbing it in and around the keys to lift the gunk off. I used this method when I used to have to clean off keyboards in a warehouse environment. They'd constantly get coated with grime and soot from the propane forklifts near the loading dock.
If you issue is that you've spilled a sticky liquid (juice, soda, etc) on your keyboard and you are trying to really get in there to make the keyboard work normally again, you might consider removing the individual keys and soaking/swabbing them with isopropyl alcohol. I wouldn't personally use water, but that's my preference.

Do NOT soak in water or put in dishwasher. Disconnect from PC, and clean it using a "Baby Wipe" or similar type cleaning wipe. You can get between and around the keys with a q-tip slightly damp with rubbing alchohal. While you are at, also pop the ball out of your mouse and clean the inside of the mouse and the two or thee little rollers inside the hole.

Unless you know your keyboard is waterproof you cant soak it in anything.
You have two ways to go about it:
1. Take a damp cloth and sum ear buds and clean its surface as best u can.
2. Take it apart, wash every plastic component (non that have electric circuits on them) and remove every key and wash it seperatly. Be carefull to remember which key goes where!!!!

I have never done that.... I have a relative that swears by putting them through the dishwasher...I've never tried it, too scared lol. You can pop all the keys off and wash it thata way, or you can use an air compressor or "canned air" to blow it. Great for getting dust and ashes.
When my son spilled coffee on mine, I popped the keys off and cleaned it with a diaper wipe & damp towel.
As for the letters, you will know if you misplaced them - I did a few, and immediately noticed

i just blow in the keys or you can buy a can of air to blow it out. that works well. then hold your keyboard upside down and shake it a little to get out the bigger stuff.
