RIT dye
You can get it at walmart or any common store that has faberic detergent.
The trick is to follow the directions, using the highest temp setting on your washing machine with the dye and the clothing/fabric. Allow to presoak for the longest time available on your machine. I think you do a regular wash and rinse in hot and then dry without using any soap. This sets the dye in place. Then you can do a run with soap if you want, though I'd still do so with like colors or alone.
TLC Trading Spaces does this all the time for cheap curtain recolors.
Please check out the below links. They even go into detail about how to use the washing machine.
*The longer it sits in hot water, the more the dye will stick and deeper in color it will be. (it states to wet the fabric first in hot water before adding to the precolored water in machine, why water it down? add directly and move it around to fully saturate.)

Rit works fairly well. If you dye with VERY hot water then it will set into the fabric better. Just be careful because most forms of clothing dye's are quite toxic. If you can either do it outside on a campstove in a pot that you dont mind throwing away, or in your washing machine on the hottest setting possible (I would even pour in boiling water). Also with either methods I would reccomend wearing a mask, and gloves. Oh also, check the label on what you are trying to dye, any commercial dye wont do anything to polyester.

RITE DYE, but keep in mind if you are trying to dye a garment that is made out of a blended cotton it won't dye that good and will fade. ALL COTTON dyes great just follow the directions.
