Nixon was going to be charged with several crimes. Due to Watergate, Nixon's resignation, along with alot of his Cabinet, plus Vietnam still tearing the Country apart, Ford thought it was best to pardon Nixon, to avoid years of court, thus keeping our Country in turmoil, instead of focusing on the important things of that era. (Run -away inflation, Vietnam, etc.) He paid for that decision in 1976, when he lost his bid for election to Jimmy Carter.

Nixon was pardoned because he committed a crime against the state. However, he resigned and admitted the misdemeanor. Ford pardoned what he did was wrong and he was honorable for resigning due to the scandal.
