Possibly a bad ground circuit to the engine or an overcharging problem supplying to much voltage

The alternator may produce too much voltage and overheat the coil, abad ground will do the same. If the engine runs poorly, check the ignition wires condition. If they arc or breakdown, this will force the coil to produce more voltage to fire the spark plugs and again overheats the coil itself and burns out.
good luck

this is a rare condition...but it is most likely caused by too much voltage going to the ignition system. This can only be caused by 2 things...either the voltage regulator in the alternator is bad or you have a bad ground wire. My money would be on the bad ground wire...check the wire from the batter - side to the body. Then look at all of your other ground wires to see that they are properly attatched or not burnt. Also...it could just be that your coil has gone bad but from the basis of your question you imply it is a recurring problem....bad ground.

Also check your spark plugs. Too much gap can ruin your coil.
