Depending upon where you are sitting and when you are attending during the run of a production as an audience member your choice of clothing can vary. Most theatre patrons are quite casual, business casual is a safe bet. It also depends upon other factors such as dinners and functions.

I just got back from New York for New years. We went see Annie at Madison Square Garden. It was night and we had the "cheap seats." I wore jeans and a cute shirt and I was dressed up. But you might want to splurge on the seats cause we had a hard time seeing the whole stage with people getting up and down, and if your short you are out of luck cause they don't have stadium seating.

People dress casually for the Theater nowadays. Many people go from work, and those that don't rarely dress up, expect perhaps on a Saturday night (and not even much then.) You can wear pretty much anything.

From the things I've seen, very subdued colors but opulent clothing. It's a serious story.
