I would like to spend around $500, is that enough to get a decent computer?

Are you the owner? Assuming that you are, you can purchase the laptop outright, rent it, or buy a refurbished one. Dell, HP, Gateway, Intel, they all sell laptops on their sites, which you can compare on various shopping sites. They also email deals, and send them by snail-mail. I'd look for those with the programs that you want to use. Also, if you rent or rent to own, you can probably get a better system now, rather than later.
