I went back to BT this week after a period on NTL at 2 meg, before that I had bulldog 16 meg through a BT line.
Right now I've got an 8 meg connection from bt total broadband, it sucks,, I'm lucky if I get a half meg, ntl were good for me and I got free upgrades every 6 mths or so, I'm gutted I went back to BT and signed up for a year,(had to due to moving house) the free equipment was good though, homehub etc but pointless if I cant download all the stuff I'm used to D/L'ing
So, I would go for telewest or NTL , far better service altogether mate.
Good luck.

you could go for cable (ntl/telewest) or a mobile card, but mobile is expensive. T mobile have plans, unlimited for data at around £40 per month.

If you're in an area supplied by a cable company (it's Telewest where I live) you could opt for them. It still means that you'll have to have a cable to your house though ... and you'll have to pay.

You may find internet cafes near to where you live, or your local library may offer a service.

There's also satellite internet, but that's really, really expensive.

Yes, you could try your cable company, satellite connection (pricey) or if you like wireless "Wi-Fi"!
