I have a slight hearing problem anyway, so they probably would buy the act. Would it wrong to once in awhile use "selective" hearing?

In my job I'm forced to listen to a lot of drivel that I've heard over and over. I just normally force myself to look at the person and nod or agree from time to time. My eyes might give me away though because I've found that I tend to blink a lot more when my mind is shutting down.

In your case, if the person knows you have a hearing problem then go ahead and use it to your advantage.

nothing's wrong with that. i do it all the time...i get bored very easily and things distract me a lot..so selective hearing is the way to go. just smile and nod and say rite and okay once in awhile. works all the time. unless they ask you a question, then you're screwed. heehee.

I used to do that, until they started insulting me just to see if I would react. Just smile, say "Why, helloooo!", and walk away quickly if you're walking already. If it's a sit-down situation and you can't get away, say "Excuse me, I was just about to make a very important phone call" as you pick up your cell.

It hurts the other person's feelings if you ignore them. It doesn't matter if you have a good excuse.
