Will History be Repeated or Defeated?

Had the Peace Democrats succeeded it is likely slavery would have continued and the Confederate States of America would have been allowed to secede from the Union and the United States would be remain a nation divided today. Lincoln’s presidency would have been a disgrace and he would have been forever labeled the president that broke the Union.

Peace Democrats. Many Democrats within this group hoped that the Union could be salvaged, but felt that military means were not justified. This faction asserted the following:
•The North was responsible for pushing the South into secession
•The Republicans were committed to establishing racial equality, a prospect opposed by many working class immigrants who wanted to protect their low-paying jobs and by racists
•Lincoln had become a tyrant and was bent upon destroying civil liberties
•The war was a national tragedy and must be ended, even if that meant granting independence to the Confederacy.

Does this sound familiar?

The historic moral victory will be achieved when the Middle East is free from the yoke of Islamic tyranny and oppression. The war of cultures will either be fought in the middle east or in your back yard, the choice is yours.

I don't know if the analogy between 19th Century Republicans and 21st Century Republicans republicans work for me 100% because the global culture and our national government is quite a bit different then it was back then. Putting those differences aside, your question suggests that there is a moral victory comparable to the end of Slavery and perservation of the Union at stake. I would like you to make your case with respect the moral victory that you think, believe and expect is a stake in the present situation. From the fact that there were Peace Democrats during the civil war; and there are Peace Democrats now; it does not necessarily follow that both Lincoln and Bush are fighting wars where in a historic moral victory is at stake. And as far as slavery goes by the time of the civil war slavery was on the decline. We have basically out sourced slavery to impoverished third world countries as wage slavery that feed Americans consumer cheap products. America is the dominant predator nation de jour. No doubt the half a trillion dollar a year payment to the beast of a military industrial complex has bought the interests of the American people some clout in the global culture.

I would just love to know what made GWB think "he" had a solution to all the fighting and killing that has gone on in the Mid East for THOUSANDS of years. His head is way too big for the White House and needs to go back to TX.

But now he's made a huge mess for the next administration which they'll be FORCED to rectify somehow.
