I do not smoke but a friend of mine does and seems to think that if she only smokes after she nurses that the toxins will not be in her milk by the time the baby nurses again. I was not sure so i thought I would ask. I do breast feed and used to smoke but would not do it now.

It really isn't safe at all; but if one MUST smoke, it's always better to do it RIGHT AFTER the baby is fed. My girlfriend did it that way and her baby was fine. She didn't smoke in the house or anywhere near the child.

And to BrendaB: That comment about bfeeding mothers caring more for their babies then formula feeding mothers do was RUDE, IMMATURE and just plain nonsense!!!! Not every woman can breast feed, whether it be b/c of lack of milk production or medications they must take (think seizure meds for epileptics). The kind of put-down you made is very hurtful to moms who can't breast feed. They don't love their babies any less than the breastfeeding woman does. How you supply nutrition for your infant is not an indication as to how much you love them. Please think before you speak.

No, the only thing you can do is not smoke because all of the toxins from the cigg goes into your breastmilk and the baby gets it. I stopped smoking when I found out I was pregnant with my daughter and my doctor told me to make sure I wasn't going to start back if I was going to breastfeed for those reasons. Sorry you just have to tough it out.

There is NO safe way. But if you are going to do it anyway, there are things you can do to make it a little better. Smoke right after your feed away from child make sure there are two hours or more between feeds. Wash your hands and arms with soap after and change your clothes...or just wear a smoking jacket. Really though its best for both of you if you can quit.

no it is not safe, the nicotine and toxins stay in your body for a lot longer than 4 hours which is the normal feeding schedule. it is very bad to smoke while breast feeding. ask your friend if she would ever give her baby a cigarette to smoke, most likely she will say no, well basically that is what she is doing. :(

We all know that smoking is bad. However, several medical authorities have stated that it is better to smoke and breastfeed than to not breastfeed at all. Your friend should obviously keep her cigarette smoking away from her baby, but breastfeeding is best even in this situation. Generally the only conditions in which it is actually better to breastfeed is if you have a communicable, life-ending disease - in countries with poor water supplies, the risks of breastmilk outweigh the risks of formula.

There is not really a complete safe way to smoke while breastfeeding or formula feeding. But if you're breastfeeding and smoke, the best you can do is make sure you smoke after you breastfeed and not before. This cuts down the risk of second hand smoke to your baby (if you smoke before the smoke can still be on you). Good luck!

Just wanted to add that breastmilk gets very little toxins in it. It is ALWAYS better to smoke and breastfeed than smoke and formula feed. The reason being that a breastfeeding mother cares more about her baby than formula feeding mothers do, therefore, they take care of themselves better. If you formula feed and smoke you think your baby is safe but if you are a formula feeding mother that at least carries her baby once in a while they can get the second hand smoke, whereas a breastfeeding mother can smoke but only after putting her baby down and not put much risk to her baby. Plus the benefits of breastmilk will cut down a lot of the risks more than formula..I'm sure they haven't scientifically altered their nasty formula to allow mothers to formula feed..Breastmilk is better no matter what, well unless you're a crackhead, that's different

Smoking anywhere near a small baby can cause various breathing problems like asthma not to mention that second hand smoke has been linked to lung cancer. It's best not to smoke at all, but certainly not near babies and children.

NO there is NO safe way, just quit smoking if you love your baby. Second hand smoke is just as dangerous to others around you.

I agree with what BrendaB said. It is better to continue breastfeeding than to stop just because she wants to still smoke. The positive benefits of breastfeeding outweigh formula regardless of whether or not the mother smokes and/or has the occasional glass of wine. Ask the La Leche League chapter near you for more information.
