I just bought a new Gateway laptop and I hooked up the wireless router. Things were fine until I turned off my computer. When I restarted, I had to hook the router up by cables again and go through a 5 minute process. Are all laptops like this, or is it because of my router? Their online support told me that I had to hook it up again every time I restarted.

Thank you!!!

Their online support just wanted to tell you anything to get you off the phone.

You should not have to hook the cables back up, there is probably something wrong with the settings on the laptop.

Are you using encryption? You might want to turn it off in the router for a few minutes to see if it is the problem.

Ok, laptop does not have a wireless router. It has a wireless antenna which connects wirelessly to a wireless router. The router is connected to a modem which has your broadband signal. The router broadcasts this signal wirelessly to the antenna on your laptop. From your description, it sounds like you have a USB antenna to connect to the laptop. The router is a separate box. You can also connect the router to the laptop directly with an ethernet cable if your laptop has an ethernet port. You need to change the settings on your antenna to not renew the connection. Read the manual.

That doesn't sound right. I have a wireless router and laptop and never have to hook up the network cable. Call the tech support # and maybe you will get someone else to give you a different answer and solution to your problem. Good luck.

You should not have to hook it up each time. Turn it on and try going to the control panel and running the wireless wizard in there. That should reconnect things.
