the main part of tagging is marking their territory. other members or rivals recognize them. it can also be used to send messages, like the crossing out of a name.

They are tags, but many people can't understand what they say. It isn't really the actual word that they are trying to convey, but more the symbol or image. They way it's written, the colors, or the font style symbolize their particular beliefs or thoughts.
