First off, where do you live? If you live in the US you can pretty well assume that the ferret you find in a pet store is already spayed/neutered and descented, that means it has had its anal gland removed. That's the one that makes the worst stink. Ferrets will always smell a bit musky, and bathing them more than once every 1 - 2 months only makes them smell worse sooner. Applying HUMAN lotion like skin so soft is most certainly not a good idea. Ferrets actually like being clean and applying the lotion will make them want to lick it off and who knows what's in that stuff.
Not only CAN you take them out of their cage, you MUST give them about 4 hours a day of playtime outside the cage(6-8???) and that is to include playtime WITH you, especially if you have an ONLY ferret without playmates.
Ferrets need care: nail clipping, bathing, ear and teeth cleaning. Not to forget the vet care for shots and emergencies(expensive)
Their litter boxes need scooped twice daily and their cages ought to be wiped down once a week when the bedding is changed. Ferrets need a large cage(expensive) with hammocks, water bottles, food dishes and several levels.
Ferrets need special food and treats and toys.
You have to ferret proof your house or at least a room so they can be outside the cage. Ferrets are inquisitive and smart and can always find something to get into or out of, sometimes your house. They love to steal things and hide them, but if you pay attention you'll figure out their hidey holes.
Ferrets can get one or more of several diseases as they get old and need a special vet to take care of them(expensive). So put away some money early so you have a vet fund available in case you need it.
Ferrets live about 6 - 10 yrs, most of them averaging 8. So make sure you are willing to put in the time and effort. They are not COOL today only for you to get tired of them tomorrow. I think they are great pets, but not for everyone.
Read up about them, join a ferret group online and talk to people that have them. Maybe they'll let you meet theirs so you can see if you can tolerate the smell and their level of activity. Some say ferrets are like kittens with ADD that never grow up.
Then, when you're sure you want one, think about adoption. Look into your local shelters or ferret rescue or check www.petfinder.com. There are lots of ferrets out there looking for forever homes. They too were bought by people who thought they wanted one because they were cool.
Good luck with your decision. Hope all works out for you.

Something many people don't even think about is the fact that a monkey is not like other pets, it's much more like caring for a small child, whereas a ferret is much more like owning other pets, both need a lot of attention but ferrets are much lower maintenance than monkeys. Personally if I was faced with that choice I would go with the ferret over the monkey, one thing is a monkey can cause your homeowner's insurance to go up, and that's not cheap. Ferrets do not smell bad (if they have they're rear scent gland removed) most ferrets sold at pet store do have theirs removed, just be sure to ask an employee. @Madeline You do NOT need a license to own ferrets in most areas, the only places that you can't have ferrets is in New York City, New York, & The State of California

Ferrets are very rewarding pets. If your nose isn't sensitive you can have an unbreakable bond with a ferret. It is very important to do your research though, Ferrets are illegal in many places. I myself have 3 at the moment and they are the best pets you can ask for. Its very important to ferret proof your house and yard as my silver gil has gotten away 3 times in a row and she is currently in a ferret rescue until tomorrow. They can be litter trained and taught to walk on a leash ( My girl who is now over the rainbow bridge used to love her walks ) They are becoming more and more popular so you have more things available at pet shops. They are by far the cutests animals you can get and if you train them properly they will be little cuddly bears. Highly recommend These pets BUT DO YOUR RESEARCH !!

Ferrets are very good pets but take a lot of time and patience. they are defiantly not for beginner's. it also depends on where you live because some places it's illegal to own ferrets. So make sure you aren't in a location where you wouldn't be able to keep one as a pet. I absolutely love ferrets and I hope you do too. and yes they are most certainly like cats but they are not cats. they also stink very baad so you could consider them as skunks.( just because they smell like them.)

I own two ferrets and I love them so much. A lot of people say they are mean, but if you take care of them correctly they won't be mean. They need at least 4 hours out of their cage a day but only 1 with you. Their food can be a little expensive but I would say it's worth it.

Ferrets are great pets, bros! Let them run around and play and explore on their own as much as you can and they'll love you for it! Don't let them talk you into letting them drive a car like Gizmo in Gremlins, tho, I found this out the hard way!

A friend of mine had 9 at one time . They are great pets if they are allowed in your state. And you can even walk them on a leash. They can be trained. Good Luck. We used to put them in shows and everything there is quite a circles of people in the Ferret world. Skin so Soft by Avon is great for them after a bath because they do have an order. But just bath them regularly.

If you get one when it's a baby, you can hope it doesn't bite as much. They do smell, buy you can get them descented, like a skunk. They will smell still. And yes, if the females don't mate they will die, so you'd have to have them spayed. They are very fun pets though, little mischief makers.
