If blankets are washable, use Ammonia. I like Lemon scent. After the washer has agitated for 5 minutes or so, stop and let the blanket sit for an hour or so, then start washer again let it run the full cycle. Use a liquid fabric softner or a cup of white vinegar to the rinse cycle. This works in hot or cold water for lots of heavy laundry problems. Good Luck :)

Read the washing instructions. Wash the blankets in warm water if possible, and hang them to dry outdoors so they'll smell fresher. If you must use an electric dryer to dry them, remove the blankets from the dryer as soon as the cycle stops and spread them out for a while so that any lingering moisture will evaporate.

Assuming the blankets are washable try any of the odor removers available at your local grocery store. Examples would be Febreeze Laundry Odor Remover, Borax, Arm and Hammer Washing Soda, etc. I think Lestoil also makes one. It might take a couple of washings but I'm sure you'll get it out if it's not too bad.

The only way I have been able to get rid of mildew smell is by either using bleach or boiling water.

Color safe bleach might work but I don't know what it will do to the colors.

I use just white towels in my bathroom because the only way to keep towels fresh is to use bleach when you wash them.

Bleach not required. Wash in hot water and hang in the sun to dry. The sunlight gets rid of the smell like a charm!

Sunshine and fresh air. There is nothing like it. Be sure the blankets are not exposed to moisture, after 4 hours in the sun between 2-4pm, bring them in.

You can add some of pine oil (I like the lemon scented pine oil) to your wash water and let them soak in it awhile. After the cycle is complete, rewash with detergent. Hope this helps!

Spray it liberally with Lysol disinfectant spray. Leave it for a couple of days, and wash it with the hottest water you can safely wash it in.
