Is this another way of offsetting one person's environmental excesses by making others be ultra-clean? Like buying up third world countries' pollution alloqances and letting first world countries exceed their own quotas? Wow.

I live in an apartment block and have a terrace. I am not allowed to have a barbecue however much I'd like to. I'll have to buy one of these Cobb Barbecues (http://www.cobbq.com/) In my old apartment I had a working fireplace and I mad it work two wonderfully romantic winters. Strange how mankind is trying to evolve away from fire in the home after so many generations but I digress.

I am not a smoker and I do ask my friends not to smoke in the apartment. I haven't had any complaints and I still have my friends. Admittedly, the terrace is a lovely place for now, but in Winter I'll have to make arrangements for their convenience. Its all a question of compromising. I couldn't live in a place where strangers control every whiff of air for smoke particles!

I have to presume Ben B is 'aving a laff!!!! He certainly doesn't know what he is talking about. Most of the others are right, if you want a living fire, you can only use a smokeless fuel. Easy, isn't it? Smokeless areas have been about for donkey's years.

You can't have an open fire with coal or wood. You'd need to buy smokeless fuel. Or not have a fire at all.

Most citys and built up areas are smokeless now, its not a worry.

in uk usually means that if you have an open fire in your home you have to use smokeless fuel. although knowing some crazy councils it could mean anything these days! Maybe your council is liberal and give out free cigarettes to every household!

Also, you need not have any smoke alarms fitted, as they are deemed unneccessary.
Fire brigades, in these areas, are required to attend all fires, within the first 3 minutes (even if it neccessitates running over pedestrians to do so) to fulfil council obligations in smokeless zones.
Though you may possess a cigarette lighter, for decorative purposes, the sale of matches is illegal, or entering a smokeless zone, With matches, in which case the police have powers to stop and search you, if they hear you rattle, passing by.
