ive had turtles and other reptiles my whole life, but recently my pet turtle surprised me, thinkng he was dead. He was apparently playing possum or zoning out. He's never done this.

This is about the time of year, that our turtle would begin to hibernate for the winter. Even though he was indoors, instinct continued. He would not eat as much and often didn't move. Maybe yours is just ready to take it easy for the next six months or so.

It may be trying to hibernate. This time of year, the dropping temps and shortening days trigger the hibernation urge- but in captivity it never gets cold enough to actually hibernate, so they just sort of waste away.

You can overcome it by setting lights and heat to simulate a summer pattern.

it depends what type of turtle it is but more than likely he is hibernating. make sure his shell is not soft anywhere and his eyes are clear.
