That's a decision that only you can make. All I can say is to do your own research and pick one or the other. I'm a Yankee fan and have been all my life. As a youngster the Yankees just happened to strike a cord with me and I've rooted for them ever since. Good luck!

You can like them both. After awhile you could even pick one subconsciously, like somebody will ask you what your favorite team is and you'll say "Mets" or "Yankees" when you never really made the decision yet, consciously. I've done that before.
Some factors are: which one do you watch on tv more? which one have you seen play live, and would I prefer going to their stadium to watch them play in the future? The more time you spend involved watching the team the more they grow on you. Is my family, neighborhood, friends, or area predominantly a fan of one of them? Sports can be a social topic among certain groups of people, and if you hear about one team enough, again, the more exposure you have to that team the more they grow on you.
Don't make your decision until you're comfortable with it, if you're going to stick with that team for the long-run. The best thing is to let the decision come naturally. All the factors I mentioned will lead to your eventual decision, and it's possible that it's a tie.

You will hear this over and over from Yankee fans: 26 World Series won, yeh, terrific, great team history, Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle, blah blah....
But if we are isolating this year 2006 alone and taking in the wording of your question, who to cheer for? Well, only the Mets are still playing right now, so cheer for them, unless you want to root for A-rod and Jeter to have nice winters checking their bank accounts....

Cheer for your favorite team and not who is hot at this time. I'm a Braves fan and I root hard for them. Now I am rooting for the Tigers to win it all!
