there was a 6.3 earthquake today in hawaii. i just wanted to know is that really bad. If so, was it worse than hurricane katrina?

Any earthquake should keep one on their toes.. but.. it did not make national news 2 days in a row.. so no.. not as bad as Katrina... death toll is what makes the news.. sad to say.. but is truth. The media controls all that. It all depends on how many people die. That is the medias bread and butter. If there were an earthquake that was 2.2 but 3000 people happened to die, then it would make news and be a bad one. The media thrives on body count. In my opinion, a 6.3 earthquake is a bad one.. but since death count was low, there will be little coverage on it.

Two different types of scale here but you can say in energy dispersion terms H K would measure about 5.0. There you have it.
