Ok. But I can't do that in one paragraph.
In a nutshell, the war started officially when Hitler invaded Poland, forcing Britain and France to declare war as per the Treaty of Versaille (which had put an end to World War I). German troops then proceeded to invade France. The French expected to defend a thin border with Germany, known as the Maginot Line, but German troops when through the buffer states of Belgium and the Netherlands, which they also invaded, and took the French troops by surprise. France capitulate shortly after the beginning of hostilities as its infantery proved incapable of stopping the advanced of German Panzers (tanks).
The battle of Britain was mostly an air battle, in which British forces defeated the Luftwaffe (German air force) in 1940. This prevented Hitler from crossing the channel. Italy also invaded Greece in 1940 (Italy was an ally of Germany). There were other theatres of operations in North Africa as well, involving European colonies, but I'm mostly sticking to the story in Europe.
Hitler then surprised everyone (especially the Russian) by launching a second attack front against Russia. At first, the Russians were taken aback and the Germans easily advanced past Moscow. But the Russian army rallied and began to show more and more resistance. The Russian front would prove extremely costly to the Nazis, in terms of troops, resources, and morale. The Russian winters would make life practically impossible for the Germans and although Russia lost more men than any other country in the war, it proved to be one of the main elements in the defeat of Nazism.
In 1941, the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbour, causing the Americans to enter the War. Americans were involved in two theatres of War: One in Japan and the other in Europe. The Japanese finally surrendered after long ground and air battles in 1945, with the dropping of two U.S. nuclear bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
On June 6, 1944, allies (Exiled French Troops, Americans, British, Canadian troops landed on the Beach of Normandie) on what is known as D-day. It was the begininig of operations that would eventually lead to the defeat of Germany. The Battle of the Bulge by the end of Dec 1944, lead by Americans, had Germany begin to cede ground. Russians were also by then winning on the East Front and advancing steadily. Intense bombings of Berlin followed for several months. On May 7, Germany surrendered to the allies. Hitler was dead by then; he had committed suicide.
Russian troops and allies met in Berlin, they divided up rule of the territories taken back from this point, leading to the East German / West German divide and the begining of the Soviet block.
