could be something as simple as your oil sending unit is bad...depending on the car...the location of this can vary...look near the oil filter it may be there or it can be located on top of the engine block. if it shows signs of leakage around it then it is probably bad. If that's not the problem...sorry but you probably have a bad oil pump or bad bearings. If I knew the make and model and engine you have in your car I could pin point the location of this item, but with no more information than you gave...it would be difficult to answer this question fully.
Hope it helps.

there could be several causes for your oil light to be on, some manufacturers have this light come on when your car reaches a specified mileage forcing you to take your car into a dealer for servicing, so that t hey can reset the light, barring that it is possible that your oil distributing system is clogged and your pressure is low ... thus setting off the oil light, it is also possible that your oil pressure sending unit is in need of replacement. Best thing to do is have a gauge put on your oil system and monitor it that way .

if you have a newer model gm, you need to reset the change/oil light. Turn the key in the "on" position without starting the car. Then, fully press and release the gas pedal three times in under 5 seconds and the light should go out. Then start your car and your change oil light should be reset.

Yes...the model for the oil change light is built on engine RPM'S, not time or mileage. The system subtracts RPM'S until they are all gone, then the light comes on.
How you drive the car will determine how the reminder works. It will "learn" your style of driving....
Or, the last time the oil was changed the light wasn't reset.

With my car, one of the spark plug was off and a tube was worn out that it broke down my car.
The oil light was on but I had no idea what the problem was until my car broke down.

You should check the sending unit, that is the senser on the engine that tells the light to come on.

The only way to get an accurate answer here is to provide detail like make, year, and model to begin with!
