I've heard that makeup should be thrown out after a certain amount of time whether you've used it all or not due to possible bacteria build up. I think there was an article on this in Glamour or Cosmo but its been quite awhile. Does anyone know about this or have a system of their own? I think certain things are good longer than others but I don't remember what. Anyone have an idea?

Lipstick-get rid if it changes smell or consistancy
Eyeliner, Mascara, Eyeshadow-3-6 mos(any longer and it breeds bacteria and could cause eye infections).
Blush-1 yr.
Foundation-1 yr.(sooner if it has a strange odor)
Pressed Powder- 6mos-1 yr
When you first buy a product, take a permanent marker and write the date on it. You will know at a glance when it is time to replace.

Hi, Yes we are suppose to throw out certain things after a few months,like liquid foundation, it has been exposed to the bacteria on your skin. If something has not been opened I will keep it , because it has not been exposed to air.Things like nail polish and perfumes go bad over time too, but you will know when they are too old.

3 months for mascara & eyeliner - 6 mo foundations- powders and eyeshadows i dont throw out - lipsticks and glosses unless the texture is changing i dont worry about it but i would say they probally tell you about a year or two - lipstick seems to last forever - if it isnt a shade thats been discontinues toss it if you dont use it n that year - i only use one or two shades of gloss so i dont have mine longer than a few mo.

a have some estee lauder powder eye shadows that are over 20 years old and are just fine. things that are creamy or liquid will develop a smell then it's tme to toss them. mascara and lipstick will literally get a smell and lipstick will apply funny when it's too old. i have never and will never buy into the you have to throw it away after three months nonsense.

Less than six months. If kept longer all kinds of things start growing in them. A woman kept her mascara 2 years and was reported losing her eyesight. It was contaminated.

foundation- 1 year after opening
powders, eyeshadow and eye pencils- 18 months
mascara and liquid eyeliner- 3 months
lipstick- 3 years
if eyeshadow or lipstick changes color, odor, or appearance, throw them away
