Color change is totally fine as long as it happens over time and not over night. When he goes to the top of the water does it look like it he trying to suck the air? If so there is not enough oxygen in the water. Do a partial water change and make sure the filter is moving to surface of the water enough to allow the oxygen to come in. Maybe get an air stone too, it doesn't actually add oxygen to the water but it helps break up the surface to help the oxygen come in.

My aunts goldfish has lived swimming upside down on the top of the bowl for years. She was told to feed it a small pea and they will turn back and swim the right way. She has done it a few times and it has worked, but usually doesn't do it. The pea just gets digested and they turn upside down again.

I have some gold fish and they can change colors. Most gold fish are black when they hatch and they change their colors later in life. As long as your fish is still swimming fine hes probably alright.
