The problem with VB is that it only runs on windows. It's also probably not as powerful a language as Java, though I've never used it. However, C# is extremely similar to Java, so I think MS developed it because VB wasn't cutting the mustard in some ways.
VB may well be easier to learn, but I'd argue that Java is a more powerful mainstream language with concepts that you can transfer to other platforms and programming environments such as C++.

VB is actually more powerful than Java. And VB is easier to learn as you don't need to learn the server/web-based stuff initially, since everything is (by default) done offline.

It all depends on what you want to do. I personally found VB6 a lot easier then 2005, although you can do a lot more with 2005. I don't know much about Java though. Also, with VB6 you can publish it as a direct .EXE, so need for setup files. I like it even though it is obselete.

Java is powerful, but requires a bit of time to grasp. Download the JDK from java.sun.com if you decide on Java.

There are database adapters for MSSQL and sq. Server in own abode page. i think of utilising the actuality own abode page is extensively used for cyber web programming as a controversy against it, is being rather closeminded. own abode page is easily able to getting used as a device or utility scripting language. that's effectual and fairly quickly too; and the code is transportable for the era of platorms very truthfully. have you ever seen finding at different languages that share own abode page's strengths? i'm thinking approximately Python. that's an rather magnificent language, that's as transportable as own abode page and that's plenty greater advantageous than VB. you in all probability have a Python interpreter working already, in case you desire to objective it.
