People probably experienced something strange they didn't understand and made up something to explain it. After a while maybe these solutions became superstitions. As far as why people still believe in them, maybe they are bored.

Truth and the obvious are often somewhat cruel. Reality is cruel. So people invent nonsense to help them cope. It's understandable, but it's so irritating, isn't it?
