We are students and live in the south of England. So if we did fly somewhere we would prefer it to be from; London, Exeter, Bristol, Bournemouth etc. We also (providing it's not too much more money) would consider hanging around for a couple of days before and after, so we're looking for somewhere with much to see.

I went to Amsterdam a couple of years ago for new year andit was amazing! If you book now, you can get flights for less than £40 return with one of the budget airlines. You can treat yourself to a hotel in the centre, or if strapped for cash, there's a great little campsite called Camping Zeeburg (if you google it, the webpage will come up) which offers very basic but clean huts that sleep 2, 4 or 6 people for under £10 a night each. There's heaters in the cabins also that are quite effective against the biting cold at that time of year! If you do go, you'll be guaranteed to have a wicked time - the dutch know how to party!

Honestly I would go to Amsterdam it's just a great place and not expensive I took an ex partner for his birthday and we wanted to stay longer as I had only booked a long weekend.
The people are lovely, there is so much to do, buy a travel book from Waterstones and this will be about £2.95 and you will see what a wonderful place Amsterdam is. If you don't fall in love with the place then you have smoked too much "Northern Lights" and there is more to do than smoking and walking around the red light district, the sex museum, the dope museum and the tattoo museum. I never bothered with the tulip fields or the Edam cheese factory or the boot trip. Eating out is cheap, every one speaks English. If you have not been then you would be crazy not to go.
I flew from London but the smaller airports also go there.
Get of the plane and you are at the train station, ask for a train ticket to Amsterdam and then get a tram, taxi or if like me walk. It was a short walk through the town, oh buy a map or print on out of the area.

Looking for something inexpensive, original, beautiful and with good connections to London for New Year? I would go to Zakopane in Poland. Certainly it will beat Amsterdam or Britain for scenery, and Iceland and the Alps for value for money. No wonder that the number of British tourist visiting the country rose by 40% last year!!!
It is a wonderful, atmospheric town in Tatra Mountains. The prices are much better than in the West. It has a very unique highland culture (so something very different from the run-of-the-mill Alpine resorts) - some people actually do walk in their folk costumes around. There are quite a few flights from UK to the nearby Krakow. While there, you can have wonderful walks in the mountains (which should look really scenic at this time), visit the famous salt mines (with underground chapels carved out of salt) in Wieliczka and see the fantastic Krakow itself.
You could try a hotel or hiring one of those nice mountain cottages for the whole group.
And believe me - the Polish people do know how to party...:-))) You are guaranteed to try some of the best vodka in the world!

In Austria , Switzerland and similar countries the New Years fest ends at 00.30 and their fests are only four tourists.
I would not say they know how to celebrate.... Only in Wien there is an outdoor fest but the the temperature is incredibly low.
It's true Europe is generally speaking a little cold. You have to go to a town with a better average temperature at night: in Italy avoid Milan, Turin , Florence and Rome,or Venice :great fest outdoor but it will be very probably below zero around midnight.

Palermo in Sicily +10 . In Spain you can go in Barcelona (+8), Valencia o Murcia or Malaga (+10).In the night it's very cold in the inland so avoid Sevilla or Granada.

Alpine regions are best - especially high snow-bound countries like Switzerland, Austria or Lichtenstein. They really know how to celebrate New Year, Christmas is guaranteed to be white and you can pretty-well forget all about cars, police and breathalizing, in all that snow, until you're safely back home...!!!
No need to go skiing either - if you don't want to. Just sit around all day or dodge the snow-flakes while trudging with friends.

Reykjavik, Iceland. The best fireworks and parties on new years eve. BA has very cheap flights from Gatwick, only takes about 3 hours. Just remember to buy your booze at the duty free :).
Reykjaik is famous for being one of the best cities to party in all year around. On the other days... relax in the Blue Lagoon (close to the airport) www.bluelagoon.is and just have fun. And in case you don't know, Iceland isn't as cold as it sounds and yes, Iceland does have the Gulf stream advantage :)

I'd say Paris or Amsterdam but it depends on where you've been. Definitely want to go somewhere new and see something new to celebrate a new year. The Iceland suggestion I read is very intriguing. Not many people can probably say they've done it. Good luck!

Europe is very cold to be spending New Years Eve. Don't you know they don't have the benefit of the Gulf steam and therefore are minus degrees in Dec/Jan. You could go skiing. Chamonix is super. Fly to Geneva, take the train and visit the ski resorts. See Mont Blanc you can even go up there and sit on the ice seats. Then take a walk down. Why not. It may be cold but is quite fantastic.

Somewhere in the Austrian mountains in a small village..........
They really know how to celebrate New Year !!! you can book into a YMCA with lots of young people and make it a time to remember. dirt cheap and good food too. Ryan Air goes to quite a few places in Austria. Good Luck !!!
