Assuming you mean that the process of inventing or discovering it was serendipitous, rather than as a characteristic of the invention itself, I would have to go with the Internet, which was never intended to be anything but a way for Swiss eggheads to share ideas and papers, and wound up becoming a new dimension in the lives of virtually (sic) everyone on the planet.
