I've had two children, and I am pretty young 28, and they never told me about this, or explained this to me. I read about it in another woman question in pregnancy. I remember getting an oxygen mask, is that what it was? and they just didn't tell me it?

the mask didn't make me feel any different. I think they gave it to me because I stopped breathing a few times, and also had some complications.

Useless as pain relief thats for sure!

I gave birth four years ago, but never had a mask it was a mouth piece kind of like you have when you go diving, the first breath made me feel really sick, but once i got into it was fine, i found it made me light headed and kind of woozy, it didnt lesson the pain in anyway, but it helped me concentrate on my breathing, my son was born in 2 1/2 hours weighing 8lb 5 oz and i needed no stitches, i assumed i was lucky the midwife said it was because the gas and air helped relax me, but even she admitted it was the best for pain releif

I think if you'd of had gas and air you would of known :)

Ohmygod. I do remember gas and air. I don't think they use it now. I have two sons now 39 yrsand 36 yrs, so a really long time ago. I had gas and air with both. It didn't really help much, just caused a great big ring around my mouth because I was pushing it so far into my face. Just searching for any relief basically. Now I think they have epidurals!!!

Entonox, referred to colloquially as gas and air, is an analgesic used to ease pain during labour, trauma and minor surgical procedures. Entonox is the trade name for a mixture of fifty percent nitrous oxide (N2O or laughing gas) and fifty percent oxygen (O2) so a more appropriate name would be gas and oxygen. Entonox is administered by inhalation from a cylinder at a pressure of 137 bar (in the UK) or from a pipeline supply.

Its analgesic effect is strong (equivalent to 5 to 10 mg of morphine) and characterised by rapid onset and offset (i.e. it is very fast-acting and wears off very quickly).

yes the oxygen mask was probably the gas and air. i had gas and air with my second baby. it didnt stop the pain but i did find it helped me to concentrate on my breathing better. im glad i had it because other than that, i had a natural birth.

its a mixture of laughing gas and oxygen. Works quite well as a painkiller in early labour.

I had it, made me feel a bit sick, but once I got past that, it was great. I havent felt that groovy since I last had a spliff years ago. The only problem I found was that it made me talk and talk and talk. I couldnt shut up, couldnt stop laughing, and I told the midwife and student midwife every explicit detail of my sex life, my husbands willy, our favourite positions, you name it, I blurted it out. My husband was absolutely furious, especially as I told the midwife my pet name for his willy!!!

I think if you had been given gas & air, you would know it. Its pretty funky stuff, you would definitely know youd been on it.

I'd love to be able to buy it, would be great fun at a party!!

I had a drug free labour and used the gas and air to help me through the early parts of it although you do get used to it in the end as the pain gets worse. I think if they give you an epidural then you don't need the gas and air.

It's called Entonox - laughing gas. It's a great natural pain relief. Couldn't have got through labour without it. I had too much was very sick after though, got through two cannisters of the stuff and had a major strop at the midwife and my hubby when they couldn't connect the 2nd cylinder when the first ran out and I was having a massive contraction!! I apologised after!!

Gas and air, just helps with the contractions. It helps to relax you and if you breathe through the pain while sucking on the gas and air, it will help.

I loved it - I had a 29 hour labour and it definately worked for me.

Yes. it was; and its useless. What really hacked me off was some women who had never had a kid telling me to "just relax" when I had a ten and a half pound breach baby!!!!!! Stupid *****. I was told "Well, of course if we had known we would have done an epidural" after I had been in labour 29 hours straight.....you mean they cant tell?????
