I work as a cook, but that's beside the point. When I dine in a restaurant, I always make it a point to tip my server. I just factor that in as part of the cost of eating out. The other day a party of ten comes in(complete with screaming kids) They finish their food and linger for almost an hour making constant requests for refills, etc. They leave the waitress a two dollar tip. I'm not sure what my point is. It just pisses me off. Any comments?

I'd be upset too! Assuming the waitress was attentive and wasn't rude, she deserved a lot more!!

Ignorance is taking over this country. It is a part of the cost of eating out. Servers make small wages because their tips are where the majority of their money comes in. They are serving you, and if the service is good they should be rewarded. I worked as a server for 3 years at a retirement home with well-to-do seniors, some of which appreciated our work and others who thought we were nothing more than serVANTS. Pisses me off too. I never leave less than 20% unless I couldn't track my waiter/waitress down numerous times when I needed something.

That is so terrible shame on them! Any one who works in a food establishment works hard, and their pay rate is less than the average job making tips part of their salary. Mommyk232 is correct most places add it on automatically when there are more than 6 people. I also think if you keep sending the server for refills that you should add a little extra to the tip!

Several thoughts in response:
a) Thanks for tipping. You know first hand how hard the servers work.
b) You witnessed a prime example of JERKhood. They exist, we all know the planet would be better without them. Personally, I am just glad I don't have to live like one.
c) Curiosity - I've been hesitant to send my food back at times because I've been told the cooks just spit on it, remix and send it back? Since you are anonymous here - care to clear this urban legend up for all of us?
Thanks.

Being a waiter/waitress, one should expect this. I always go with the standard of 15%-20% of my bill being the tip. No more...no less.

The people that are bad tippers ARE remembered by the staff. What goes around, comes around.

They were wrong.

ALso- any decent restaurant adds a standrad gratuity on to parties over 6 people. You might want to suggest that.
