Just about everyone I know doesn't have health insurance. This sounds pretty bad. Who actually has health insurance?

I do, but I have to pay for my husband's, since he can only get insurance through me. He just got it a few months ago. Until then he joked he was on the Republican health care plan: "Don't Get Sick."

Yeah, I agree, it does sound pretty bad. Did you know that the US is one of only two industrialized nations in the world without a national health care plan? The other is South Africa. (That may have changed, I haven't see any statistics in a couple of years.)

According to the Census Bureau 1 in 5 are not covered.

An increase in the number of Americans without health insurance has become an important concern for policymakers. An analysis of the Census Bureau’s Current Population Surveys reveals that the number of people in the United States without health insurance at some point during the year has grown from about 31 million in 1987 to nearly 45 million in 2005. The uninsured increased from 14 percent of the total nonelderly U.S. population in 1987 to 18 percent in 2005.

The uninsured are up to four times less likely to have a regular source of health care. They are about 30 percent more likely than insured adults to go without screenings for diabetes, heart disease and other conditions. According to a 2003 report by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the uninsured are more likely than those who have health coverage to receive second-rate care and to die from health-related problems. Economic research suggests that extending health coverage to the uninsured could improve their overall health on average by 7 to 8 percent.

According to the article, most Americans fear the cost of coverage and do not realize that they can obtain coverage for as little as $20 per month. But, It is a good idea to check with a qualified insurance agent before purchasing a health insurance policy. Health policies can get very complex and can hidden coverages/non-coverages. Many younger adults do not have health insurance and many of the older retired/unemployed adults do not have it either. Sadly, many of the school age children do not.

However, young adults can get affordable health insurance via one of the HMOs out there. I say affordable because if you have a need for it, it is there and doctor visits and medication cost far less with it than without it. From that perspective, if you are working, it would be a positive monthly payment.

I have health insurance and I pay dearly for it, but it is there when I need it so I am thankful for it.

Do you know anyone with full-time jobs? A lot of companies offer health insurance to their full-time employees. You may still have to pay a lot for it, but it's worth it. Where I work, some of the full time hourly employees don't have it beacuse they say they can't afford it with the wages they earn. I earn a decent hourly wage and can still afford it and pay all of my bills. I'm pretty sure all of the salaried employess have insurance, as they make more money than the hourly employees. But if you think it's too expensive, consider the thousands of dollars you'll have to pay out of pocket if you get sick or injured. It's expensive, and you may not always use it, but you'll have the peace of mind of knowing it's there when you need it. That's why it's called insurance.

Hey, Joyann - why on earth would we get a thumbs down for our answers? Were we offensive?
