You think Bloodsport is the best martial arts movie ever? Then apparently you haven’t seen many martial arts films. In terms of overall choreography Bloodsport, like most of Jean Claude Van Damme’s films, is pretty cliché. Every film he does is interspersed with your standard repertoire of kicks, punches, holds, round houses, splits, and your occasional acrobatic moves.
Better martial arts films are Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, House of Flying Dragons, or Hero. If you don’t care much for the “bullet time effects” and the wire tricks that are part of these films, and you are looking for something that is more naturalistic, but still gravity defying and awe inspiring, try Tony Ja’s films “The Protector” and “Ong-Bak – Thai Warrior”. He doesn’t rely on wire tricks, but his acrobatic skills, coupled with extensive choreography make any Jean Claude Van Damme film look like it is production made by the WWF. Tony Ja’s martial artistry is poetry in motion and his athleticism is something that hasn’t been seen since Bruce Lee and the golden years of Jackie Chan.
